Steep slopes right off the back door are one of those property problems that just don't go away on their own. You can't really use the space, it's a mud and erosion headache every time it rains, and getting in and out safely is a genuine hassle. That's exactly what this homeowner in Bloomington was dealing with before we got to work.
Here's what we were working with - a rough, uneven grade running along the entire back of the house. No real usable yard space near the door, just a slope that fought back against any attempt to make the area functional. The goal was to cut that grade down, hold it in place permanently, and give the homeowner a clean, level area right outside their back entrance.
We built a segmental block retaining wall that wraps the back of the home, stepping down with the natural grade of the property. The wall holds back a significant amount of soil and creates a solid, flat zone right off the door - somewhere you can actually walk, park equipment, or eventually build out a patio or landing area. We also integrated a set of steps directly into the wall so there's a clean path from the lower grade up to the door. No awkward scrambling up a dirt slope anymore.
That's the real value of a well-built retaining wall. It's not just about looks - it's about making your property actually work for you. The block material we used holds up against the freeze-thaw cycles Indiana throws at it every year, and the wall is properly engineered to handle the soil pressure behind it. Done right, this is a long-term fix, not a patch job.
Slopes like this one are more common than people think, especially on properties that sit higher than the surrounding grade or have been partially graded during construction. If you've got a problem area that drains poorly, erodes constantly, or just sits there being unusable, a retaining wall is usually the cleanest solution to the whole thing.
